Whenever I drive on PCH I always look “up” at the Bel Air Bay Club and think how wonderful it would be to engage in plein air painting of, and from the location. Architecturally and geographically it has a quintessential California Plein Air atmosphere.

From my 2014 exhibition at Craig Krull Gallery one of my collectors, Ken Anderson, bought several of my plein air pieces. At some point Craig mentioned that Ken is very active in the BABC. About a month later I had one of my little “lightbulb” moments…… what if Craig were to suggest that I spend several weeks at the club and produce a suite of gouache paintings. Ken liked the idea, proposed it to the board, and a date for late August was set.

I loved having a period of time which enabled me to really scrutinize many aspects of the upper and lower portions of the club, indoor views, outdoor views, events unfolding before my eyes, etc.

2 weeks resulted in 25 works, 12 of which are now part of the club’s permanent, California art collection.
